Recovery Efforts Conclude
The remains of all 11 victims have been recovered from the site of the Nippon Dynawave Packaging facility in Longview, Washington, following a chemical tank implosion earlier this week. This marks the end of extensive recovery operations that commenced after the disaster on Tuesday, May 26th.
The Fallen
The confirmed dead include: Gilbert Bernal (52), brothers Tyler Covington (29) and Brad Covington (27), Robert Wilson (48), Dale Miller (54), Jared Ammons (35), Braydon Finkas (38), Clinton, or CJ, Doran (26), John Forsberg (51), Norman Barlow (58), and Dillon Miller (age not specified). Each recovered individual has been identified.
Injured and Unaccounted For
Beyond the fatalities, seven other employees and one firefighter sustained injuries during the incident.

With the recovery phase concluded, authorities are now shifting focus to a more comprehensive investigation into the precise causes of the chemical tank rupture. The scale of the disaster has led some to suggest it could be the "deadliest industrial tragedy in modern Washington state history."

Environmental Concerns
The implosion resulted in a spill of "white liquor," a chemical mixture used in paper pulping, into a drainage ditch. While officials stated the contaminated water was diverted from a local well field, samples indicated contamination in a nearby river, with dead carp subsequently found.
Community Impact
Leaders within the Association of Western Pulp and Paper Workers have spoken of the deceased as integral members of the community, describing them as "fathers, sons, friends, mentors, and co-workers." The loss is being felt deeply by those who worked alongside them and contributed to the facility's operation.
Background: The Incident
The disaster occurred on Tuesday, May 26th, at the Nippon Dynawave Packaging plant. The tank involved was designed to hold 900,000 gallons of white liquor, a substance containing sodium hydroxide, sodium sulfide, and disodium carbonate. The catastrophic failure of this tank led to the fatalities and injuries, and a significant chemical release into the environment.
