Kollam Junction railway station redevelopment efforts confront complications from existing train operations. N K Premachandran, a Member of Parliament, indicated today that train services may see altered schedules to facilitate extended work periods. This move aims to hasten construction at the site, where work above railway tracks reportedly faces severe limitations during daylight hours due to ongoing traffic. The statement followed a high-level meeting Tuesday, assessing progress and seeking solutions for finishing the project without undue public burden.
As of early May 2024, general work had reached an estimated 25% physical completion and 20% financial progress. During that period, the concrete batching plant had been established. Approximately 36 existing facilities – including the Railway Magistrate court, the RMS office, the Parcel office, and the Crew control office – had been moved to temporary quarters, intending to speed up construction of the South Terminal.
The South Terminal's initial phase showed 162 of 486 piles completed for piling work, alongside 34 of 129 pile caps in place. Multi-Level Car Parking (MLCP) third floor roof concreting was noted as progressing. The air concourse saw 92 out of 119 piles completed.
Previously, by July 2025, the construction of the service building, substation, MLCP, parcel service, and specific Block A and B structures of the South Terminal's first phase were reported as complete. This was conveyed by Ashwini Vaishnaw, the then minister, responding to N K Premachandran in Lok Sabha.
Project Scope and History
The redevelopment project for Kollam Junction falls under the ' Amrit Bharat Station Scheme '. It is planned to expand across both the southern and northern sides of the current station structure. Once completed, the design indicates new lifts, escalators, multi-level car parking, areas for passenger pick-up and drop-off, and separate arrival and departure areas. The station records an approximate 1.6 crore passengers each year. TSR Nirmaan Pvt. Ltd. was awarded the contract for the air concourse and associated work in April 2024.
