Police reports indicate the driver initially stopped but departed the scene before law enforcement arrived. A family member reportedly pursued the driver to a subsequent location and informed them of the child's death, after which the driver allegedly denied involvement and left again.
The incident occurred in Tadens's neighborhood as he was playing outside. One report specifies the vehicle, a marked Amazon delivery van, had just completed a delivery in the area. Tadens was pronounced dead at the scene due to his injuries.
Driver in Custody, Then Released
Authorities took a driver into custody in connection with the incident. However, the individual has since been released pending further investigation, with no charges filed as of yet. Kansas City Police stated the release was necessitated by the 24-hour detention limit without formal charges. Amazon has confirmed its cooperation with the ongoing police inquiry.
