A catastrophic explosion at the Surya Sri Fire Works facility in Vetlapalem village, Kakinada district, has claimed at least 21 lives, with many others critically injured. The incident, which occurred on Saturday around 2 pm, ripped through the unit where approximately 35-40 individuals were engaged in mixing explosive materials for firecracker production. Officials have stated that the exact cause of the explosion remains under investigation, with preliminary reports suggesting potential breaches in licensing and safety protocols at the facility, identified as a large firecracker manufacturing unit reportedly storing significant quantities of explosive materials daily.

The devastating blast has brought into sharp focus the precarious conditions faced by workers in the firecracker industry. It is reported that approximately 90 percent of workers in such units across Andhra Pradesh are registered as agricultural labourers, a classification that reportedly leaves them without formal occupational safeguards or protective gear. This situation was tragically underscored at the Kakinada unit, which, despite having permission for only eight workers at a time, had over 40 present during the incident.

VICTIMS AND COMPENSATION EFFORTS
The majority of the victims are reported to be women. In the wake of the tragedy, the Andhra Pradesh government has announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹20 lakh for the families of each deceased, with the central government pledging ₹2 lakh from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu visited the accident site and met with injured workers and bereaved families, assuring them of full state support. Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan also visited victims' families, vowing to tighten enforcement to prevent future incidents.

THE OWNERSHIP AND ABSCONDING OWNER
Reports indicate that the owner of the Surya Sri Fire Works unit, Adabala Nani, is currently absconding. His father, Adabala Srinu, was reportedly present at the unit during the blast and is among the deceased.
SAFETY PROTOCOLS AND INDUSTRY PRACTICES
The incident has ignited calls for a thorough review and enforcement of safety practices within the fireworks industry, particularly during peak production periods. The lack of adequate safety measures and the registration of workers under different categories raise significant questions about regulatory oversight.
