Josh Tapper, a figure known for his family’s presence on the Channel 4 programme 'Gogglebox', has been selected as the Labour candidate for the Hertsmere constituency, setting him on a collision course with Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden. This selection, confirmed in March 2024, places Tapper, a 26-year-old account manager, in a challenging electoral landscape, tasked with overturning a substantial Conservative majority.
Tapper's political aspirations in Hertsmere involve confronting Oliver Dowden, the incumbent Conservative Member of Parliament. Dowden secured his seat in 2019 with a majority of 16,951 according to some reports, though another cites the majority at 21,313. Tapper's campaign will also contend with Emma Matanle of the Liberal Democrats and Darren Selkus of Reform UK, among others.
His background includes a stint in the civil service after departing 'Gogglebox' in 2017, having initially joined the show in 2013 at the age of 15. Reports from the time of his civil service apprenticeship suggested early interactions within government circles, including with then Prime Minister Theresa May's cabinet. He has also been involved with charitable work, including a trusteeship for Homeless Action in Barnet and volunteering for cancer care charities and food banks. Tapper has stated that education would be a key focus of his platform.
