A Controversial Figure Lands a Role in an Upcoming Franchise Entry
James Franco has been cast in a role within the forthcoming "John Rambo" prequel, marking his return to major studio productions after a prolonged absence stemming from multiple allegations of sexual misconduct. The film, helmed by Jalmari Helander, is set to explore the early life of the titular character, predating the events of 1982's "First Blood."
Franco confirmed his participation in the project, identified as a "big studio movie," during discussions at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival. He indicated that this particular film would likely be ready for release towards the end of this year or in spring/summer 2027. While specific details of his character remain undisclosed, reports suggest he will portray a "small villain part."
This casting represents Franco's most significant Hollywood endeavor since numerous women, including former students from his acting school, leveled accusations of sexual misconduct in 2018. While Franco has previously denied some allegations and acknowledged others, stating he was "wrong" in using his "fame like a lure," he has also expressed a desire to "move forward and live a positive life."

The "John Rambo" prequel is also slated to feature Noah Centineo as a young Rambo and David Harbour as his commanding officer, Major Trautman. The production has reportedly wrapped in Thailand.
Background: A Career Interrupted
Franco, once a prominent figure known for roles in the "Spider-Man" trilogy, comedies like "Pineapple Express," and critically acclaimed performances in "127 Hours," faced a significant career downturn following the widespread accusations. Although he has remained involved in independent and European film projects during his hiatus from major productions, this "John Rambo" role signals a notable comeback. The actor's career trajectory prior to the controversies saw him garner an Oscar nomination and establish himself across various genres.
