ROOKIE GOALIE ON BARGAIN DEAL FUELS CANADIENS' POSTSEASON RUN
The Montréal Canadiens are witnessing a breakout playoff performance from goaltender Jakub Dobes, a development that stands in stark contrast to his current financial standing within the league. Dobes, instrumental in the team's postseason success this season, is operating on a rookie contract, a situation that places his salary among the lowest for active starting goalies. This arrangement has him performing at a star level while earning a fraction of what established netminders command.
The goaltender's current contract, a two-year, one-way deal agreed upon on July 6, 2025, pays him an average of $965,000 per season. This agreement extends through the 2026-27 campaign. While this salary was set before his significant playoff emergence, it underscores the financial advantage the Canadiens hold as Dobes solidifies his reputation as a dependable, and seemingly star, player.

Dobes's impact in the current playoffs has been undeniable. His play has been described as a primary driver of the team's forward momentum, a crucial element for any team aiming to win. This performance comes at a time when the team's general manager might be considering long-term financial commitments.
THE ARBITRATION AND THE CONTRACT
Jakub Dobes avoided salary arbitration on July 6, 2025, electing instead to sign a two-year pact with the Canadiens. This deal was announced as extending from the 2025-26 season to the 2026-27 season, with an average annual value of $965,000. This contract was negotiated prior to his recent string of high-stakes performances.
During the 2024-25 season, Dobes appeared in 16 games for Montreal, posting a record of 7-4-3, with a 2.74 goals-against average and a .909 save percentage. His three postseason appearances in the same period, though yielding a slightly higher 2.91 GAA and .891 save percentage, included his first career playoff win against the Washington Capitals on April 25. He was noted as ranking fourth in wins among rookie goaltenders in the NHL for that season and was one of five first-year goalies to achieve a shutout.

BACKGROUND ON DOBES'S ASCENSION
Dobes spent his initial professional year primarily with the Laval Rocket in the American Hockey League, where he saw significant playing time. He was called up to the Canadiens in late December 2024 after backup goaltender Cayden Primeau encountered difficulties. His transition to the NHL team proved successful, and he remained with the club thereafter. When regular starter Montembeault was injured during the first round of the playoffs against Washington, Dobes was called upon to step into a more prominent role.
His contract status upon its expiration in 2027 will see him remain a restricted free agent, eligible for salary arbitration. However, he will be one year shy of unrestricted free agency rights at that juncture.
