Illinois has reportedly landed Stefan Vaaks, a highly-touted transfer guard from Providence, as the men's basketball program retools following its first Final Four appearance in over two decades. Vaaks, a 6-foot-7 perimeter player from Estonia, is recognized as one of the premier talents available in the transfer portal this offseason, consistently ranking among the top 10 nationally according to various scouting services.
Vaaks' commitment is a significant acquisition for the Illini, who are facing the departure of their entire starting backcourt. Freshman guard Keaton Wagler has declared for the NBA Draft, and Kylan Boswell has exhausted his eligibility. Vaaks' arrival is framed as a key piece in their effort to remain competitive.
Vaaks’ performance at Providence showcased his offensive capabilities. He averaged double-figure scoring in all but two games during his freshman season, demonstrating notable playmaking skills and offensive versatility for his size. His standout games included scoring 23 points against St. John's and 20 points in another matchup, followed by 25 points and 21 points against Villanova. He also put up 28 points in a game against Butler during the Big East tournament. His offensive contributions and ability to handle on-ball responsibilities are seen as a strong fit for the Illini's system, particularly alongside their "stretch bigs."

The acquisition of Vaaks, who has three seasons of eligibility remaining and is noted for his NBA potential, aligns with coach Brad Underwood's preferences for offensive players with high ceilings. His addition is expected to bring dynamism to the team's offense, especially in pick-and-roll situations. While not a direct one-to-one replacement for Wagler, Vaaks is expected to fill a similar on-ball role.
The transfer portal window is set to close on April 21st, making this a timely and strategic move for Illinois. Despite the backcourt turnover, the Illini anticipate the return of key players such as David Mirkovic and the Ivisic brothers, Zvonimir and Tomislav, which could bolster their lineup for the upcoming season. Vaaks earned Big East All-Freshman team honors for his debut collegiate season.
