Michael Brennan, a 24-year-old PGA Tour player, has captured widespread attention after an unusual maneuver during the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. Facing a tricky second shot on the par-5 18th hole at TPC Louisiana, Brennan opted to remove his shirt to attempt a shot from the course-side water hazard, rather than taking a penalty drop.
The unconventional decision, made to avoid a penalty stroke, resulted in a viral video and significant online discussion. While Brennan's teammate Johnny Keefer joked that the golfer "might get a few DMs," the attempt itself proved unsuccessful. Brennan's shot from the water landed back in the hazard, though the pair managed to recover with a par and subsequently had a strong first round, shooting a 61.
Other golfers have also experimented with similar tactics, though with varying degrees of success and public reaction. Chandler Phillips, for instance, removed his shirt and shoes to play a shot from the marsh on hole 16, a move that drew attention for his noticeable tan lines. Separately, Wesley Bryan stripped down to his boxers and tied his shirt into a "bikini style" to attempt a shot on the par-4 16th. These instances highlight a trend of players adopting unorthodox methods when faced with challenging lies near water.
