Epic Games is increasing the price of its virtual currency, V-Bucks, for the popular game Fortnite, citing rising operational costs. The changes, effective March 19, will see players receiving fewer V-Bucks for the same amount of real-world money across several purchase tiers.

The stated reason from Epic Games is that "the cost of running Fortnite has gone up a lot." This move comes despite the company's reported substantial revenue, with one source indicating they made over $6 billion in the past year.

Shifts in Purchasing Power
The core of the price adjustment involves a reduction in the quantity of V-Bucks offered per dollar. Specific examples of the new pricing structure include:

$8.99 Pack: Now provides 800 V-Bucks, down from the previous 1,000 V-Bucks.
$22.99 Pack: Will now offer 2,400 V-Bucks, a decrease from 2,800 V-Bucks.
$36.99 Pack: Customers will receive 4,500 V-Bucks, reduced from 5,000 V-Bucks.
$89.99 Pack: This tier is adjusted to 12,500 V-Bucks, down from 13,500 V-Bucks.
"Exact Amount" Pack: The smallest purchase option, 50 V-Bucks, will now cost $0.99, a notable jump from the prior $0.50.
This means players will effectively pay more for the same quantity of V-Bucks they previously purchased, a scenario some find particularly concerning given Epic's financial standing.

Concessions and Criticisms
In an attempt to soften the blow, Epic Games is also implementing some price reductions on various in-game passes. These include:
Battle Pass: Now costs 800 V-Bucks, down from 1,000 V-Bucks. It will also award 800 V-Bucks upon completion.
Battle Bundle: Reduced from 2,800 V-Bucks to 2,600 V-Bucks.
OG Pass: Now priced at 800 V-Bucks, a decrease from 1,000 V-Bucks.
Music Pass and Lego Pass: Both will now cost 1,200 V-Bucks, down from 1,400 V-Bucks.
Additionally, Epic Games is introducing an 'Epic Rewards' system. Purchases made through the 'Epic Games Store' or their proprietary payment systems across PC, iOS, Android, and web will grant users 20% back in credit. This credit can be used within Fortnite, other Epic titles, or on the Epic Games Store itself.
The announcement has been met with some skepticism, with certain outlets questioning the timing and framing of the price increases, particularly the phrase "pay the bills" when juxtaposed with the company's reported profits.
Background Context
This isn't the first time Epic Games has adjusted V-Buck prices. A previous increase occurred around mid-2023, when the cost of 1,000 V-Bucks rose from $7.99 to $8.99. The game Fortnite, a battle royale shooter developed by Epic Games, remains a dominant force in the gaming industry, utilizing a free-to-play model supported by in-game purchases. The company also profits from its 'Unreal Engine' and the 'Epic Games Store'.
