The fishing vessel St Xavier tipped into the water at 5 a.m. Saturday near the coast of Puthuvypeen. Six men went into the sea. Five were pulled out alive by a separate fishing crew working nearby. One man, identified as Renjan (62), a skipper from Ambalapuzha, died from injuries sustained during the immersion.

Renjan (also reported as Ranchan) was the srank of the crew.
The boat capsized almost immediately after leaving the shore.
Death was confirmed at a hospital following the rescue of the group.
The Mechanics of the Incident
The hull of the St Xavier lost its upright position shortly after departure. The shift from a floating tool to a Sinking Hazard happened quickly enough that the crew could not keep the vessel level. While the other five crew members survived the transition from the deck to the water, Renjan suffered physical damage that the hospital could not fix. He was a resident of Neerkunnam in the Alappuzha district.

Institutional Labeling
The Fort Kochi Coastal Police have opened a file. They have categorized the event under the heading of unnatural death. This is the standard bureaucratic box for lives that end via gravity, water, or machinery rather than biology.

"The cause of the capsize has not been established."
Police are currently gathering statements from the five survivors. There is a plan to drag the St Xavier back to the surface to inspect the wood and the engine.

Background
Puthuvypeen sits on the edge of Kochi, a space where industrial fishing and the sea frequently collide. Small-to-mid-sized vessels like the St Xavier depart daily in the early hours. When a boat fails, the response relies on the proximity of other fishermen. In this instance, the proximity saved five lives but could not preserve the sixth. The boat remains a Submerged Object until the recovery operation begins.
