Washington D.C. - US Congressman Eric Swalwell has announced his resignation from Congress, following escalating claims of sexual misconduct. This decision comes after Swalwell's withdrawal from the California gubernatorial race, spurred by mounting pressure from these allegations.
The core of the accusations centers on a former staffer's claim that Swalwell engaged in sexual encounters with her when she was too intoxicated to consent. A separate accuser, Paige Drewes, has also come forward, alleging Swalwell drugged her drink and subsequently raped her in 2018. Drewes stated she plans to present evidence to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's office, which has confirmed an ongoing investigation into her claims.

Several other women have detailed experiences with Swalwell. One former staffer alleged sexual assault when she was under the influence. Another accuser, Ally Sammarco, claims Swalwell sent her unsolicited explicit photos. A fourth individual has made similar allegations regarding unsolicited videos.

Swalwell has publicly refuted the claims, calling them "flat false." Despite these denials, the allegations have significantly impacted his political standing. California election officials have confirmed that Swalwell's name will remain on the primary ballots for governor, as it is too late to remove it. The state's primary election system advances the top two vote-getters regardless of party affiliation.
The ethical repercussions are also being considered, with inquiries into Swalwell's conduct planned by the House ethics committee. This development follows a pattern of similar pressures faced by other lawmakers, such as Gonzales, who also withdrew his re-election bid after admitting to an affair with an aide. Calls for expelling both Swalwell and Gonzales from the House have emerged from several lawmakers.
