Carlton Football Club confirmed on Monday night that player Elijah Hollands has been admitted to hospital. The admission follows an incident during Thursday night's match against Collingwood where Hollands displayed behaviour described by the club as a "mental health episode."
The club is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding Hollands' performance on Thursday. Details emerged that Hollands had informed club officials prior to the game that he was struggling with his mental health, yet expressed a desire to play.
Carlton chief executive Graham Wright stated on Sunday that the club had not confirmed when staff became aware Hollands was unwell during the match. He also ruled out alcohol or illicit substances as a factor affecting Hollands during the game.
The AFL and AFL Players Association (AFLPA) are awaiting the findings of Carlton's internal inquiry. Darcy Moore, Collingwood captain and AFLPA president, indicated the association's close involvement in the investigation into Carlton's handling of the situation.

Hollands, 23, has a history of taking personal leave from Carlton last year, at which time he spoke about his battles with mental ill-health and issues with alcohol. He was invited back to training over the summer and reportedly earned his place back on the list.
The club has issued a statement asking for privacy for Hollands and his family, and urging the media not to report or speculate on his location or private health information. Carlton stated they are providing "close and ongoing care" and that Hollands' welfare is their "number one priority." The club remains in contact with the AFL and AFLPA.
