Pop artist Dua Lipa has initiated legal action against Samsung, seeking no less than $15 million in damages. The core of the complaint, filed in the US District Court for the Central District of California, centers on allegations that Samsung utilized a copyrighted photograph of Lipa without authorization on the packaging of its televisions.
The lawsuit claims Samsung engaged in copyright infringement, trademark infringement, and misappropriation of Lipa's likeness and image, aiming to capitalize on her celebrity status to sell products.
Lipa's representatives contend that Samsung prominently featured an image of the singer on TV boxes, specifically promoting the "Xite Hits" channel on Samsung TV Plus. This image, reportedly taken backstage at the 2024 Austin City Limits Festival, is claimed to be a registered copyrighted work belonging to Lipa, who holds significant commercial publicity and trademark rights over it. The complaint alleges that this unauthorized use began in 2025, with Lipa becoming aware of the situation in June 2025.

Fans have circulated images of the Samsung television boxes featuring Lipa on social media. Some consumer reactions, cited in the legal documents, suggest an impact on purchasing decisions. One such comment reads, "I wasn’t even planning on buying a tv but I saw the box so I decided to get it," while another stated, "I’d get that TV just because Dua is on it." Lipa's legal team argues this demonstrates a deceptive practice, creating a false association that suggests an official endorsement of Samsung's products.
The lawsuit further asserts that Lipa and her team repeatedly demanded Samsung cease the use of the image, with allegations that the company was "dismissive and callous" and continued to place the products on shelves. Lipa is seeking a jury trial, a permanent injunction to halt the sale of the packaging, actual damages, and the surrender of any profits Samsung derived from the boxes featuring her image.

Lipa has a history of high-profile commercial partnerships, having collaborated with brands such as Porsche, Apple, Chanel, Tiffany & Co., Puma, Versace, and Yves Saint Laurent. However, the complaint explicitly states that she never entered into a promotional agreement with Samsung. The legal filing notes Lipa's global ambassador roles, including for Versace and Nespresso, highlighting her established brand value that the lawsuit claims Samsung improperly exploited.
Samsung has been contacted for comment but had not responded at the time of publication.
