SAN FRANCISCO – A dog found itself in a precarious position yesterday, clinging to a narrow ledge on a steep San Francisco cliffside before being rescued by firefighters. The incident, which occurred around noon above Funston Beach at Fort Funston, involved a dog that reportedly slipped on vegetation and tumbled about 40 feet down the bluff.
The animal, apparently unharmed, was safely retrieved by a San Francisco Fire Department crew employing a low-angle rope rescue technique. Fire officials stated the dog was unfamiliar with the area and lost its footing. Following the rescue, the dog was returned to its owner.
A Familiar Danger Zone
Rescue Captain Samuel Menchaca of the San Francisco Fire Department highlighted that the area where the dog fell is unfortunately a frequent site for rescues. "Firefighters unfortunately have to rescue people a lot in this area," Menchaca commented. He used the occasion to remind the public about safety, urging visitors to "stay on marked paths, keep their dogs on leashes and their small children close." Menchaca also added that while the department is prepared for such events, "they don’t want people to get hurt."

The canine, according to reports, was so appreciative that it offered "everyone kisses" upon its safe return. The rescue operation itself was characterized as a standard, albeit necessary, procedure for the department.
