POLICE RESPONSE TO DISTRESS CALL PREVENTS SUICIDE BID
Police in Cumbum acted swiftly following a distress call, intervening to prevent a man from ending his life near the railway station. The incident occurred around 9:47 p.m. when the Cumbum police station received an alert from the man's friend. A team, leveraging "technology-based support," located the individual and reached the site in time to avert the suicide attempt. Following the intervention, the man received counselling and emotional support from the police before being reunited with his family. Officials, including Harshavardhan Raju, acknowledged the coordinated efforts of the Cumbum police, control room staff, and the IT core team. The man's family expressed gratitude for the prompt and effective response.
The individual has been identified as L. Gautham, a 29-year-old man from Krishna district who had been residing in Kambham for approximately three months. This incident near Cumbum, an area with some documented railway activity, highlights a pattern of events associated with transportation hubs.

Elsewhere, police in Delhi recently utilized a social media tip on the platform X to locate and intervene with a man contemplating suicide at a railway station on January 21st. The alert, shared via Telegram, was promptly acted upon by the station house officer of the New Delhi Railway Station. This incident underscores the role of digital communication in emergency response, a theme echoed in other reports where individuals are noted to have been "recruited online."
The broader issue of suicides occurring on or near railway tracks is a documented concern. Reports indicate a range of circumstances, from young students preparing for competitive exams like JEE and NEET facing difficult situations to instances where individuals have died after falling from moving trains. Some studies, such as one analysing rail suicides in England between 2019-2021, suggest the circumstances are "complex and multifaceted."
