Cooper Flagg, the No. 1 pick in last year's draft, has been named NBA Rookie of the Year. The Dallas Mavericks forward secured the honor on Monday, narrowly besting Kon Knueppel, his former Duke teammate.
Flagg's statistical dominance across multiple categories, coupled with a late-season surge, appeared to sway voters in a race that was described as one of the most contentious in recent memory.
Flagg led all rookies in scoring, averaging 21.0 points per game. He also ranked second among qualifiers in assists with 4.5 per game and third in rebounds, pulling down 6.7 boards each contest. This impressive stat line places him in select company, joining legends like Larry Bird, Michael Jordan, and Luka Doncic as the only rookies since the NBA-ABA merger to average at least 20 points, six rebounds, and four assists.

The voting results underscored the tight competition. Flagg garnered 56 first-place votes out of 100 cast by reporters and broadcasters. Knueppel, selected No. 4 overall by the Charlotte Hornets, received 44 first-place votes. While other finalists were in contention, the primary debate centered on these two former college roommates.
Knueppel also put forth a strong rookie campaign, averaging 18.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 3.4 assists. He notably became the first rookie to lead the league in three-pointers made, sinking 273 from beyond the arc. However, reports suggest that Knueppel's performance in the Play-In Tournament may have impacted some voters' decisions.
At 19 years old, Flagg becomes the second-youngest player to win the Rookie of the Year award, trailing only LeBron James. His individual achievements were highlighted by an exceptional 51-point performance against Orlando, marking the first time a teenager reached that scoring mark in the NBA. He also set a rookie record for three-pointers made in a single game and was the youngest player to achieve at least 10 assists in a game.

The debate over who deserved the award intensified in the latter stages of the season, with both players displaying moments of brilliance. Flagg’s “explosive performances down the stretch” were cited as a key factor in his eventual victory, while Knueppel’s shooting prowess, particularly his volume of three-pointers, made him a formidable contender. The total vote points reflected the close nature of the race, with Flagg accumulating 412 points to Knueppel's 386.
