Political upheaval has gripped the Chhattisgarh Assembly, with the alleged illegal cultivation of opium on farmland linked to a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) functionary erupting into a major point of contention. The opposition Congress party has launched a vociferous attack, demanding accountability and a thorough investigation, leading to significant disruptions and the suspension of numerous Congress lawmakers.

Political Storm Over Alleged Opium Farming
The controversy centers on the discovery of opium poppy cultivation on land associated with Vinayak Tamrakar, a leader within the BJP's Kisan Morcha. Following the surfacing of the issue, the BJP swiftly moved to suspend Tamrakar from the party, citing damage to its image. Arrests have been made, with three individuals—Vikas Vishnoi, Manish Thakur, and Vinayak Tamrakar—reportedly produced before a court.

The Congress party has escalated its protest, storming the Assembly and demanding the resignation of the Home Minister. Opposition leader Charandas Mahant highlighted the proximity of the alleged operation to the state capital, Raipur, pointing out that such large-scale narcotics activity was discovered barely 50 kilometers away.

The BJP's defense, articulated by deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Vijay Sharma, states that the government acted promptly upon receiving information about the cultivation. Sharma indicated that Durg police acted on a tip-off received on March 6, conducting raids and subsequently making arrests.

Assembly Paralysis and MLA Suspensions
The intense debate and protests have led to a standstill in the Assembly. Reports indicate the suspension of at least 29 to 35 Congress MLAs, including Mahant, for staging a protest and pressing for a work stoppage motion on the matter. This drastic measure underscores the gravity of the political clash.
Former Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel has accused the government of attempting to shield Tamrakar. He further alleged irregularities in the initial police report (FIR), suggesting that the servant of the BJP leader was listed as the primary accused, while Tamrakar was designated as the third accused. This assertion implies a deliberate attempt to downplay Tamrakar's alleged involvement.

Congress MLAs have called for an inquiry into the potential role of the revenue department in the alleged illegal farming.
Background and Escalation
The Durg district has reportedly seen its first opium cultivation case, though the Congress maintains that Chhattisgarh's drug problem is not a new phenomenon. The scale of the alleged operation, with initial reports suggesting cultivation on 4-5 acres, later evolving to 10 acres, has amplified concerns. Authorities have also reportedly attached properties valued at over Rs 16.7 crore in connection with the case.
The political ramifications continue to unfold as the Congress insists on a full disclosure of the scandal's extent. The incident has undeniably cast a shadow over the state's law and order situation and ignited a fierce political contest between the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress.
