A Swift Ascendancy
The Charlotte Hornets have formalized their commitment to head coach Charles Lee by signing him to a multi-year contract extension, announced this past Thursday. This move comes after Lee guided the team to a remarkable 25-win improvement in his second season, marking the largest year-over-year gain in franchise history.
The Hornets finished with a 44-38 record, a significant leap from the 19-63 record of Lee's inaugural season. Despite narrowly missing the playoffs, the team's trajectory under Lee's guidance has been undeniable. After a mid-season slump that saw them at 16-28, Charlotte surged, finishing with an impressive 28-10 record in the latter half of the season. During this strong run, from January onwards, the Hornets posted the league's No. 1 net rating at +10.5.
Key Player Contributions and Team Culture
The resurgence was also fueled by strong performances from key players. Rookie Kon Knueppel and LaMelo Ball notably finished first and second in the league for three-pointers made. Lee has been credited with fostering a "team-first culture rooted in accountability, hard work and professionalism."

"Charles has done an outstanding job establishing a foundation for who we want to be as a team," stated Jeff Peterson, president of basketball operations. "I’m excited to keep working closely with Charles as we continue to build the Hornets for long-term success.”
Lee himself expressed optimism about the team's future: "I'm excited about the direction we're headed and our team's bright future. I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity to continue leading this team and building on what we've started here in Charlotte."
A Look Back at the Season
A Season of Two Halves
The Hornets' season presented a stark contrast between its beginning and end. After struggling to a 16-28 start, the team experienced a dramatic turnaround. This second-half surge included a seven-game winning streak in February and saw them playing at an elite level.
The team achieved the No. 1 net rating (+10.5) in the NBA from January onward.
Their road point differential in January was tied for the highest in NBA history.
The Hornets reached the Eastern Conference play-in tournament, ultimately falling short of ending a 10-season playoff drought after a loss to the Orlando Magic.
Player Development and Future Focus
Beyond the team's overall success, individual player development has been a focal point. Lee has emphasized the importance of continued growth, noting areas for improvement from players like rookie Kon Knueppel, particularly in leadership for his second year. Ball, a Rookie of the Year candidate, had a strong season overall, despite a late-season shooting slump. Other notable contributors included Brandon Miller and veteran Miles Bridges.

The Context of Lee's Tenure
Charles Lee, 41, joined the Hornets for his first head coaching role after a decade as an assistant coach with teams including the Boston Celtics, Milwaukee Bucks, and Atlanta Hawks. His previous experience has seemingly translated into a significant impact on the Hornets' performance and organizational direction. The team's ownership group has expressed a strong desire for sustained competitiveness and growth, moving beyond just being a "competitive team."
