The Charlotte Hornets have formalized their commitment to head coach Charles Lee by signing him to a multi-year contract extension, announced this past Thursday. This move comes after Lee guided the team to a remarkable 25-win improvement in his second season, marking the largest year-over-year gain in franchise history.
The Hornets finished with a 44-38 record, a significant leap from the 19-63 record of Lee's inaugural season. Despite narrowly missing the playoffs, the team's trajectory under Lee's guidance has been undeniable. After a mid-season slump that saw them at 16-28, Charlotte surged, finishing with an impressive 28-10 record in the latter half of the season. During this strong run, from January onwards, the Hornets posted the league's No. 1 net rating at +10.5.
Key Player Contributions and Team Culture
The resurgence was also fueled by strong performances from key players. Rookie Kon Knueppel and LaMelo Ball notably finished first and second in the league for three-pointers made. Lee has been credited with fostering a "team-first culture rooted in accountability, hard work and professionalism."

Their road point differential in January was tied for the highest in NBA history.
The Hornets reached the Eastern Conference play-in tournament, ultimately falling short of ending a 10-season playoff drought after a loss to the Orlando Magic.

Lee has emphasized the importance of continued growth, noting areas for improvement from players like rookie Kon Knueppel, particularly in leadership for his second year.
