Police Investigate Birmingham Tournament Incident
James McCabe, an Australian tennis player ranked 234th, has reported that his father and coach, Patrick, was hospitalized following an alleged assault by a tournament staff member at the Edgbaston Priory Club. The incident, which occurred on Monday, is reportedly linked to a disagreement over the use of practice courts during the British grass-court season's opening tournament. West Midlands Police have confirmed they received a report of an assault at the venue and are conducting ongoing inquiries. No arrests have been made.

McCabe alleges the staff member initiated physical contact with his father near a doorway, leading to Patrick's hospitalization. The player has taken to social media to describe the event as a "serious police-reported player/coach safety incident" and has issued a public appeal for witnesses to come forward, emphasizing the need for their accounts to be "properly identified, preserved and independently reviewed."

McCabe himself was eliminated from the tournament on Wednesday, losing his first-round match. The tournament, which features events on the ATP Challenger and WTA 125 tours, has reportedly been contacted by the LTA (Lawn Tennis Association) regarding the allegations.

The venue, Edgbaston Priory Club, is understood to dispute the characterization of the incident as an assault, although McCabe's understanding is that the staff member admitted to police to having "put his hands on" Patrick. The alleged altercation took place on June 1st.
