Certain segments of critical road infrastructure around Belagavi appear poised for, or are in the final stages of, completion. Officials have indicated that the six-lane Belagavi-Sankeshwar highway is nearing its end, and parts of the Halaga-Macche bypass, a 9-km stretch on the Belagavi-Panaji National Highway (NH748), are also expected to be finished.
The Halaga-Macche bypass, a significant arterial link intended to divert heavy vehicles from city thoroughfares, is undergoing accelerated work. This 9-km section is reported to be nearing completion, with heavy deployment of manpower and machinery observed. While some parts of the stretch are reportedly already in use by commuters via an eastern link, the official timeline for its full operationalization has been varied, with some reports suggesting completion by December. The bypass is designed to connect the Suvarna Soudha area with the Belagavi-Goa National Highway.
Work on the Belagavi-Kittur-Dharwad railway line is also proceeding. Land acquisition for this project is a notable hurdle; the first phase, covering approximately 1,200 acres, has received approval, with the state government allocating ₹50 crore for farmer compensation.
Elsewhere, for the 43.8 km Phase 1 stretch of the Belagavi-Hungund-Raichur highway, most land acquisition appears to be finalized. Meanwhile, development at Belagavi Airport is described as slow, with pending land handover from the Indian Air Force cited as a reason.
Road Works in Progress
The Halaga-Macche bypass, a 13.33 km project, has seen its work get underway after being stalled. Reports detail significant construction, including underpasses, a road over bridge (ROB), bus shelters, and service roads along certain sections.
The Belagavi-Sankeshwar highway, a six-lane project, is in its advanced stages, with officials stating it is in the final phase of completion.
A 9-km bypass on the Belagavi-Panaji NH-748 is reportedly being expedited, with work commencing on a war footing.
Rail and Air Development
The Belagavi-Kittur-Dharwad railway line has seen progress on land acquisition, with ₹50 crore sanctioned for farmer compensation.
Development at Belagavi Airport is facing delays, attributed to the Indian Air Force's yet-to-be-completed land handover.
Background and Political Oversight
Recent reviews of these infrastructure projects have been conducted by MP Jagadish Shettar, alongside officials including District Collector Mohammed Roshan and NHAI Project Director Bhuvanesh Kumar. These meetings have focused on accelerating land acquisition processes and addressing various project bottlenecks. The impetus for these projects appears linked to efforts to reduce urban congestion and improve regional connectivity. Farmers have previously agitated regarding the completion of bypass roads, though some reports suggest current on-site conditions have seen less public demonstration. A total allocation of ₹1,622 crore has been mentioned in relation to these projects, aimed at alleviating city traffic.
