DENVER — The Colorado Avalanche edged the Minnesota Wild 9-6 in a wildly offensive Game 1 of their second-round playoff series on Sunday night. The contest, played at Ball Arena, marked the 10th time in NHL history a playoff game featured at least 15 combined goals, underscoring the game's rare, high-scoring nature.
The Avalanche initially established a significant lead before the Wild mounted a comeback, only for Colorado to reclaim control in a dramatic third period. Cale Makar was instrumental, scoring twice in the final frame after an earlier undisclosed ailment forced him from the game. His second goal, with under three minutes remaining, secured the victory at 8-6. Makar's performance included two goals and an assist, while Devon Toews contributed four points.
Offensive Barrage Marks Game 1
Fourteen different players registered goals throughout the game, a figure tied for the second-most in playoff history. The Avalanche set a franchise record for goals scored in a playoff game.
