Pitching Trio Seals Historic Victory
Houston Astros pitchers Tatsuya Imai, Steven Okert, and Alimber Santa etched their names in baseball history on Monday night, completing a combined no-hitter in a decisive 9-0 shutout victory over the Texas Rangers. This marks the first no-hitter in Major League Baseball in 629 days, breaking a lengthy spell where no such feat had been achieved.
The combined no-hitter by the Astros on Monday is the first in MLB since September 2024, when Shota Imanaga and two Chicago Cubs relievers accomplished the same against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Debutant Santa Makes Immediate Impact
The game also featured a remarkable debut from Alimber Santa, a 23-year-old who became the first pitcher since 1900 to participate in a no-hitter during their very first MLB appearance. Santa pitched two perfect innings, capping his performance with his first career strikeout.
Imai, a 28-year-old right-hander in his rookie season after transitioning from Japan, initiated the no-hit bid.
He overcame an early wobble, walking three of his first four batters, but found his rhythm after benefiting from a first-inning double play.
Imai recorded 16 outs, with the last 16 batters he faced retired before handing the ball to Okert to start the seventh inning.
Okert also issued a walk during his time on the mound.
Drought Breakers
The Astros' 9-0 win against the Rangers at Globe Life Field not only celebrated individual pitching excellence but also ended a significant drought for the league. The absence of a no-hitter since late last year had become a notable talking point. The Astros themselves now boast 17 regular-season no-hitters in their franchise history.
