Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh - A concerted push to confront the specter of drug abuse has taken root across Andhra Pradesh, manifesting in a series of public awareness initiatives. Central to this effort is the recently concluded 'Drugs pai Dandayatra' cycle rally, a 34-day, 510-kilometer odyssey culminating in Vijayawada. The initiative, orchestrated with the stated aim of fostering a drug-free society, involved extensive public participation, including students, officials, and community leaders. The campaign identified 149 drug 'hotspots' within the Commissionerate, placing them under constant surveillance using CCTV, drones, and frequent search operations. This effort also led to the registration of cases against 25 individuals under the PIT NDPS Act and the identification of 2,513 drug users, who were subsequently offered counseling and treatment at government hospitals.
The state apparatus, encompassing the EAGLE Police and other departments such as Revenue and Health, has been actively involved in these endeavors. The ‘Dandi Yatra 2.0’ itself draws inspiration from Mahatma Gandhi's historic Salt March, repurposing its symbolism for a contemporary battle against substance dependency. Participants, some even donning costumes reminiscent of Gandhi's original followers, engaged in marches and public meetings to disseminate their message. A 100-meter flag march is slated to occur in every district and constituency, amplifying the campaign's reach. The participation of senior government officials and police personnel underscores the seriousness with which the administration is addressing the issue.

Scope and Execution of the Campaign
The 'Drugs pai Dandayatra' cycle rally, under the leadership of NTR District Police Commissioner S.V. The 'Vibrants of Kalam' organization has been instrumental in collaborating with the Andhra Pradesh Government on this initiative. Their founder, Vijay Kalam, articulated the aspiration to evoke a similar national awakening as Gandhi's original march, but now focused on the eradication of drugs. Public meetings are a key component, aiming to engage citizens directly and enlist their support in building what is described as a healthier and safer society.
Background Context
The Narcotics Control Bureau, a central agency, maintains a network of zonal directors and additional directors across various cities in India, tasked with combating drug trafficking and abuse. This national framework provides a backdrop against which state-level initiatives like the 'Dandi Yatra 2.0' operate. The focus on identifying 'hotspots,' constant surveillance, and providing counseling and treatment for identified users reflects a multi-pronged strategy to address the drug menace.
