Actress Discloses Stage 1 Diagnosis Occurred During Profound Family Loss
Amanda Peet, the 54-year-old actress, has disclosed her battle with stage 1 breast cancer, a diagnosis that emerged during a period when both her parents were in hospice care. The revelation, detailed in an essay published recently, sheds light on the complex emotional landscape she navigated while confronting her own health crisis against the backdrop of immense familial tragedy.

The diagnosis of breast cancer was confirmed last fall after routine scans revealed concerning changes in Peet's breast. A subsequent biopsy confirmed the presence of a "small" tumor. She underwent treatment that included a lumpectomy and radiation. Her first clear scan, indicating recovery, was received in January, shortly before her mother's funeral arrangements were being made.

Peet opted to keep her diagnosis private, particularly from her mother, who was in the final stages of Parkinson's disease and undergoing hospice care. This decision was made to spare her mother additional worry during an already agonizing time. Peet's father was also in hospice care on the opposite coast. She reportedly flew to be with him but tragically missed his final moments.

The actress shared that she has "dense" and "busy" breasts, a condition that necessitated more frequent monitoring with a breast surgeon every six months. Her doctor's initial concern during an ultrasound examination led to the biopsy that ultimately revealed the cancer.

Peet's treatment regimen for her hormone-receptor-positive and HER2-negative breast cancer did not involve a double mastectomy or chemotherapy. She managed her treatment, including a lumpectomy and radiation, while simultaneously dealing with the impending deaths of both parents. She disclosed her diagnosis to her three children: daughters Frances, 19, and Molly, 15, and son Henry, 11.
