Texas Sweeps USC Upstate, Extending Undefeated Streak
The No. 3 Texas Longhorns concluded their pre-Southeastern Conference schedule with a dominant weekend sweep over USC Upstate. The series culminated in a decisive 13-3 run-rule victory on Sunday, marking the team's fifth consecutive game scoring double-digit runs. This final tune-up before conference play leaves Texas with an undefeated 12-0 record==.

The offensive prowess was on full display throughout the weekend. Junior first baseman Casey Borba was a significant contributor in Sunday's finale, launching a three-run homer and accumulating five RBIs, including an eighth-inning RBI double. The team's consistent scoring has reached a notable benchmark, achieving double-digit runs in five straight contests for the first time since 1989.

The Longhorns' pitching staff also showed strength. RHP Ruger Riojas pitched effectively in the series opener, boasting a 3-0 record and a 1.12 ERA entering the weekend. While LHP Dylan Volantis had a less stellar outing on Sunday, giving up six hits and three runs in 4 2/3 innings, other arms, like freshman RHP Brett Crossland who delivered a perfect eighth inning in the finale, contributed to closing out games. Texas’ overall team ERA stood at a national second-best 1.71 as of March 5, with a WHIP of 0.94.

Spartans' Struggles Against Top Competition
USC Upstate, a member of the Big South Conference, entered the series having already faced two Southeastern Conference opponents, Georgia and South Carolina, both of whom defeated them. The Spartans’ own pitching statistics presented a contrast to Texas' formidable numbers, with projected starters like RHP Brent Stukes (2-1, 6.28 ERA) and RHP Max Bianchini (1-1, 7.43 ERA) facing steep challenges. LHP Chris Torres, who was slated to start, held a 0-1 record with an 8.25 ERA.
Looking Ahead: SEC Gauntlet
With the nonconference portion of their schedule concluded, Texas now pivots to the demanding reality of SEC play. The conference is recognized for its depth, with 13 teams earning NCAA Tournament bids last year. The Longhorns’ success in maintaining an undefeated record and showcasing offensive and pitching depth positions them as a significant contender as they prepare to enter conference battles. Their first true road game of the season is scheduled for Tuesday against Texas State in San Marcos.
