BUFFALO, NY -
The Buffalo Sabres marked their return to postseason play with a dramatic 4-3 victory over the Boston Bruins in Game 1 of their first-round series. This win, their first playoff contest in 15 years, was etched in comeback fashion, with the Sabres erupting for four goals in the third period.
The Sabres overcame a two-goal deficit late in the third period, a feat achieved by only one other team in regulation playoff history in the last eight minutes of play. This resilience shattered a playoff drought stretching back 14 seasons, a franchise record.
The revival began with Tage Thompson igniting the scoring for Buffalo. The team's offensive surge continued, with Mattias Samuelsson netting the go-ahead goal with just over three minutes remaining. Alex Tuch sealed the victory with an empty-net goal, though David Pastrnak managed to cut the deficit to one in the dying seconds for Boston. Goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made 17 saves for the Sabres.

Boston's efforts included goals from Pastrnak and Morgan Geekie, who also contributed two assists. Elias Lindholm added another goal, while netminder Jeremy Swayman turned away 34 shots.
The triumph comes shortly after the Sabres secured their first Atlantic Division title since the 2009-10 season, a significant turnaround after years of absence from the playoff picture. The atmosphere in KeyBank Center, described as shifting from somber to ecstatic, reflected the long-awaited return of meaningful hockey for the fanbase. Signs and banners displayed by supporters underscored the duration of their playoff absence, a span of 5,472 days.
This series opener against the Bruins was just one of several playoff games contested on Sunday. Other matchups included the Montreal Canadiens defeating the Tampa Bay Lightning in overtime, the Colorado Avalanche securing a narrow win against the Los Angeles Kings, and the Vegas Golden Knights triumphing over the Utah Mammoth.
