North Dakota Democrats have officially backed Trygve Hammer for another attempt at the state's single U.S. House seat. The endorsement came after Hammer delivered a speech at a convention criticizing Republican incumbent Julie Fedorchak, highlighting perceived failures on issues ranging from President Donald Trump's policies to healthcare and military representation.
Hammer's campaign, announced in January and solidified by recent party endorsement, centers on concerns over healthcare access, housing, and rural economic prospects. This marks his second consecutive run for the congressional position, having previously lost to Fedorchak in 2024.

"North Dakotans are not better off now than they were a year ago."
Hammer's critique of Fedorchak pointed to her votes against an Iran war powers resolution and her alleged lack of public town hall meetings. He expressed worry about the representation of military personnel, including his own children and their spouses, under Fedorchak's tenure.

The campaign has seen a challenge within the Democratic party itself. Helene Neville has indicated an intention to contest Hammer in the primary election, introducing an internal dynamic to the party's efforts.

Fedorchak has not yet formally declared her bid for a second term, though she currently holds the seat for the remainder of her first term. Other Republican candidates, including Alex Balazs and Ferris Broxton, have announced their intentions to run.
Hammer, a retired Marine veteran, educator, and former oil field worker, has positioned himself as an advocate for North Dakotans in Washington D.C. His platform emphasizes demanding Congress reclaim its "rightful powers."

"We need a representative who will demand that Congress take back its rightful powers."
The nominated candidate's background is varied, encompassing military service, practical labor experience, and a career in education, now amplified by his role as a political columnist. This multifaceted experience is being presented as a foundation for his advocacy.

Hammer's campaign appears to be focusing on issues such as affordable housing and healthcare costs, areas where he claims Fedorchak has not met her campaign promises.
