Peninsula School District has apologized and reinstated a Gig Harbor High School girls basketball coach, following an investigation into allegations of alcohol consumption during a team trip. The district placed three coaches on administrative leave in January after a parent reported that they had been drinking during a tournament in Florida in December.
All three coaches admitted to consuming alcohol during the trip. The investigation, which involved interviews with six players and the three coaches, was initiated after the parent's complaint. Two of the coaches suggested to district investigators that the parent's concerns might have stemmed from dissatisfaction with her daughter's playing time.
Following the coaches' suspension, John Callaghan and Brian Cox, former South Kitsap basketball coaches, were brought in to assist Dan Dizon, the interim coach. Dizon, who previously coached at Gig Harbor and works as the executive director of human resources for the Peninsula School District, was leading the team during the coaches' absence.
