Dianna Russini, an NFL reporter for The Athletic, has resigned from her position. This departure follows less than a week after photos surfaced showing her with New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel at an Arizona resort. The publication of these images triggered an internal investigation by The Athletic, a New York Times-owned entity.
The core of the situation centers on published photographs of Russini and Vrabel, both married individuals, at a Sedona, Arizona hotel. The images, appearing before the NFL owners meetings in Phoenix on March 29, prompted scrutiny regarding potential conflicts of interest and journalistic conduct. Both Russini and Vrabel issued statements downplaying the depiction in the photographs.
The Athletic's editorial guidelines, according to The New York Times, stipulate that journalists must "avoid any activities that pose a conflict of interest or the appearance of a conflict, so as not to call into question their credibility." The outlet has confirmed that Russini's conduct was under investigation prior to her resignation.

In her resignation letter, Russini stated, "I do so not because I accept the narrative that has been constructed around this episode, but because I refuse to lend it further oxygen or to let it define me or my career." She also expressed gratitude for the initial support from The Athletic, noting that the outlet had "supported me unequivocally" and "expressed confidence in my work and pride in my journalism" upon the initial appearance of the story.
The Patriots organization has not publicly commented on whether Coach Vrabel faces any disciplinary action related to the photographs. Vrabel, a three-time Super Bowl winner as a player, is reportedly preparing for his second season as head coach of the Patriots. The Athletic reportedly plans to continue its internal review.
