Mavericks Fall Despite Flagg's Historic 51-Point Outburst
DALLAS – Rookie Cooper Flagg, at 19 years and 103 days old, etched his name into the NBA record books Friday night, becoming the youngest player ever to score 50 points in a single game. His 51-point performance, however, wasn't enough to lift the Dallas Mavericks to victory against the Orlando Magic, who secured a 138-127 win, marking the Mavericks' 14th consecutive home defeat.

Flagg's 51-point effort makes him the youngest player in NBA history to reach the 50-point milestone.

The game was punctuated by a series of ejections, including Mavericks coach Jason Kidd and forward Naji Marshall. Both were removed from the game for protesting a perceived no-call on a foul against Flagg by Orlando's Desmond Bane. Flagg himself indicated that Bane admitted to intentionally fouling him. The rookie scored a remarkable 24 points in the fourth quarter alone, including six of nine three-point attempts.

Youngest Ever to Hit 50
Flagg's scoring spree not only made him the youngest player to break the 50-point barrier but also the first teenager in NBA history to achieve such a feat. This historic night saw him surpass his previous career-high and solidify his presence in a season already marked by impressive rookie performances. He has now recorded multiple 40-point games, a feat matched only by Michael Jordan among first-year players since the NBA-ABA merger.
Season Performance Amidst Struggles
Despite the individual brilliance, Flagg's rookie campaign with the Mavericks (currently 24-53) has been overshadowed by the team's overall struggles. Nevertheless, Flagg has consistently performed, averaging 20.8 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game. He has also been noted for his development, with some observing he has "checked every box every time he’s taken the floor." His three-point shooting, previously a point of critique, showed marked improvement in this game.

Ejections and On-Court Drama
The frustration of the game boiled over with the ejections of Coach Kidd and Naji Marshall. Reports suggest they were protesting a play where they believed Flagg was fouled without a call. Flagg himself was briefly pulled from the game by assistant coach Frank Vogel when he reached 45 points, an unusual decision late in a historic scoring night.
Background
Cooper Flagg, the No. 1 overall pick in last year's NBA draft, has been a focal point of the Mavericks' season. This performance is seen by some as a significant boost to his " Rookie of the Year " candidacy, a race that has seen various contenders throughout the season. His early season encountered challenges, including efficiency issues when playing point guard, a new position for him. He had previously become the second-youngest player to surpass 1,000 career points, trailing only LeBron James.
