Alec Baldwin, the actor whose career has been shadowed by the fatal 2021 shooting on the set of his film Rust, has declared a desire to retire from acting. He states he no longer wishes to work and wants to remain at home with his wife, Hilaria, and their seven young children, alongside his eldest daughter, Ireland. The actor, who recently turned 68, made these remarks on The Hollywood Reporter's Awards Chatter podcast, reflecting a profound shift in his priorities following the tragic incident that resulted in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.
Baldwin has spoken openly about the extensive physical and emotional toll the Rust tragedy and subsequent legal battles have exacted. He revealed suffering from severe illness, including orthostatic hypotension which caused him to black out repeatedly, and experiencing what he described as a significant mental strain, suggesting the ordeal has "taken 10 years off" his life. The actor recounted blacking out multiple times and being bedridden for eight days during the period of intense legal scrutiny.

A Shift in Perspective
The prolonged period spent at home with his family, particularly during the years after the Rust shooting, appears to have been a catalyst for Baldwin's decision. He credited his wife, Hilaria Baldwin, as a central source of support throughout this difficult chapter. This extended downtime away from the demands of film sets and cameras has evidently reshaped his view of his career and personal life, leading to a desire for a more secluded existence.
Despite this stated intention to retire, Baldwin has several projects slated for release, including The Cutting Room Floor and National Lampoon's Hollywood Hustle, where he portrays a fictionalized version of himself. His most recent on-screen appearance was in the Spanish comedy Torrente Presidente, playing Donald Trump.
Background of the Tragedy
The fatal shooting occurred in October 2021 on the set of the Western film Rust in New Mexico. Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed when a prop firearm, which Baldwin was holding, discharged a live round. Director Joel Souza was also wounded in the incident.

The armorer on the film, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and served a prison sentence. Criminal charges against Baldwin for involuntary manslaughter were initially dismissed in July 2024 by a Santa Fe judge, who ruled that the prosecution had concealed evidence from the defense. However, the case's dismissal and the ensuing legal proceedings have remained a significant part of the aftermath for the actor. Baldwin himself returned to finish filming Rust as part of a settlement agreement with Hutchins' widower.
